This assessment shows that as a leader I often have difficulty identifying the right problem to answer and when to bring up the problem. Based on this assessment, I should follow the tricks and tips in chapter one of Patterson et al.’s book. I need to focus on finding the root cause of problems and identifying where the confrontation actual lies (Patterson et al., n.d.). Another area of focus is speaking up and not avoiding confrontation. As a personality trait, I am more avoidant than confrontational. Areas of confrontation I tend to avoid are with staffing and co-workers. I usually try to just cope with the problem even if it really bothers me then address it. I used to have to work with a co-worker who was unmotivated to do dialysis treatments and would oftentimes take forty-five minutes to get up to even get prepared to do the treatment. However, this co-worker and I had a good friendship and instead of just addressing the motivation issue with her I did extra work so everything got done. Issues I tend to instigate and address are those that impact patient care. I am very passionate about delivering high-quality compassionate care. When practices are delaying treatment or causing negative reactions for patients I speak up loud and clear. All patients that I care for must get the best care I can give them and anything that causes harm to him I will instigate. Tips of speaking up include gathering data and preparing what I will say to my superior. If it is a patient care issue I will collect examples of how actions negatively impact patients and prepare possible solutions. Silence to violence is a habit that occurs frequently in healthcare. Factors that contribute to this habit include long hours, stakes are high, mistrust of co-workers, and power over relationships (Maxfield & Grenny, 2017). Healthcare workers often work long hours with difficult patients, families, and co-workers. We often see that we ourselves as keeping quiet and coping with these difficulties instead of addressing them.
